I have come up with a short list of programs and modifications that I have found to be very useful in FS2004. I have included a short summary of the program as well as where to download it and the filenames. And if you do modify anything, remember to make a backup of the files that you are replacing, so that you can revert to your old files if needed. If you have programs that you like, send a reply with the program info and where it can be downloaded.
ACA2005 – Scans your aircraft.cfg files for errors in the [fltsim.xx] entries and allows you to correct them. It can also generate a more reliable timetable for an airport than the Timetable feature of Ultimate Traffic. There is also a Light version that only scans your aircraft.cfg files. These programs can be downloaded at http://aifs.pvdveen.net/ ****Edited on 4/10/2006 to reflect new URL for website****AFCAD – Will edit existing airport information and can even
create a basic, no-frills airport. You
can edit runways, taxiways, parking and communication. Download from http://www.avsim.com. Filename: afcad221.zip AirEd
– Use AirEd to hide your AI aircraft from the aircraft selection menu in
FS2004. Download from http://www.avsim.com. Filename: aired.zip AITM
(AI Traffic Mover) – Use to modify and create flightplans. Download from http://www.avsim.com. Filename: aitm12sp1.zip (read the readme.txt
file for additional files needed) GA
Traffic – This program will generate more realistic GA traffic than the default
GA traffic from Microsoft. Download
from http://www.avsim.com. Filename: ga-traffic_setup.zip ScanAFD
– Will scan your AFCAD files and will display duplicate AFCAD files so that you
can remove any duplicates. Download
from http://www.avsim.com. Filename: scanafd.zip World
Of AI Installer – If you plan on adding in any of the flightplans from World Of
AI, you will need to use their installer.
Download from http://www.world-of-ai.com/ Airport
Environment Upgrade – Will modify the default airports by adding tire marks on
the runways, modifying the tarmac and buildings. Download from http://www.avsim.com. Filename: aeu7.zip EditVoicepack
– Will modify the ATC speech engine to include new callsigns, airport names and
ATC names as well. Download from http://www.avsim.com/. Filename: EditVoicepack31.zip. (read the documentation for additional files
needed) FS9
Configurator – Of the many things that this program can do, the most important
is being able to modify the AI taxi speeds.
Download from http://www.avsim.com/ Filename: fs9cfg15.zip Light
Replacements – This program will adjust the spot lights on the aircraft, making
them brighter. Download at http://www.planesimulation.com/fsdownloads4/FS4u1x7.htm Filename: xenon2.zip Airport
Lighting Upgrade – Will enhance the nighttime lighting at airports. Download from http://www.avsim.ru/ Filename: apt_lite.zip Snapshooter
– Take screenshots the easy way. This
program will save a screenshot in the format, size and location that you
want. Download from http://www.avsim.com/ Filename: ss211final_setup.zip Realistic Touchdown Effect – Improves the tire smoke on
touchdowns. Download from http://www.avsim.com/ Filename: touchdowneffekt.zip Nicks AI Exhaust – Will add realistic exhaust to your AI aircraft. Download from http://www.avsim.com/ Filenames: 777smoke.zip, ai_aardvark_ai_jet_exhaust.zip, cdai-evolve-djc_ai_smoke_list.zip, dee_waldron_ai_jet_exhau st.zip, fernando_martinez_ai_jet_exhaust.zip.zip, nicks_js_up.zip, nicksaijetexhaust.zip, njs_final.zip, russian_ai_jet_exhaust.zip |

Great list, Craig! One I would add is asynchronous_strobes_effects.zip by Scott Gridley (at Avsim) which de-synchronizes the AI aircrafts' strobe lights. Looks a lot more realistic than having hundreds of planes all flashing at the same time. |

Here is one that I forgot. I sometimes use this, when I want to spice things up when I fly.
Random Failure - Will generate a random failure during your flight that is not "planned" like in the MS failure settings. Will it be a NAV radio or a loss of oil pressure...who knows? But it'll happen, you can count on that! Download from http://www.avsim.com Filename is: randomfailure-1.0.zip |

GenAir v1.1 will scan the flightplans.txt for airports being used and create an airports.txt if one did not come with the fp's. http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004util&DL ID=80192

That's a nifty little utility. AITM & ACA2005 will also generate an aircraft.txt file from a flightplan, but Genair is much quicker. Very useful for anyone creating their own flightplans. For me, one of the most useful add-ons that I have ever used is the shareware FSNavigator. Worth every penny. Also, FSRepaint from Abacus. Useful for viewing installed aircraft and textures without having to load FS. Free demo version available, which does everything except save. If, like me, you only want to use it for viewing rather than editing or creating textures, the demo is all you need. |

Great list, Craig. In fact, AFCAD is just what I needed at the moment to modify a default airport to its current design. Can anybody recommend a good forum for asking AFCAD questions from beginners like me, like why do my trees grow out of the concrete parking apron? John |

John, Or you could try asking here! A couple of us have some experience in this area. As a last resort, naturally, and nothing too complicated! However, Afcad can't solve the trees problem. For that, you need to either create an Exclude file for the Autogen (e.g. using ExcBuilderV2 by Paavo Pihelgas is perhaps the simplest option), or adjust/create the grass skirting polygon around the airport (using a scenery design program, e.g. SBuilder, Ground2K4 etc.) Here are a couple of recent threads on Avsim describing the options in more detail: Hope this helps, |

Thank you, Adrian. I'll give them a try. And I believe you answered my question too. I'll persue your suggestions and see what happens. Thanks again. John |

Another program to add to the list:
JABBgl - Allows you to correct elevation problems between scenery files and AFCAD files so that your aircraft are not hovering. Download from http://www.avsim.com and the filename is: jabbgl_134445.zip |

I would not recommend the usage of JABBGL. I don't like modifying the default APnnnnn.bgl files. Too much possibility of corruption. There is an alternate method to make those changes with AFCAD or preferably XML files compiled with BGLComp.exe. Basically the airport header with the revised elevation - the new file is placed in the Scenery\World\Scenery folder and corrects the elevation when the terrain mesh loads. I consider the BGLComp SDK and the TrafficToolBox SDK from Microsoft essential. BGLComp allows me to use Exclude builder and make other modifications. TrafficToolBox.dll placed in the modules folder gives you exact information on all the active AI aircraft on your system. |
