Today's topic - the Yak-40's bigger brother - the Yakovlev Yak-42. As always, first a few notes on models and repaints :
All but two repaints are avaiable from the holy trinity of FS websites avsim.com, flightsim.com and avsim.ru You will need at least three to install all the repaints, and they look all horrible except one, because until recently none had a proper paintkit. Only the CIS model has one and in the long run, I'll probably re-do all repaints for the newer model. 1. The CIS Yak-42D, also sometimes referred to as the CIS model. This is the only one that comes with a proper paintkit. A fairly complex one. 2. The de-facto standard model for many years has been the Yak-42 by Anton Nikolaev (Xomer). It comes with a "base texture" which is completely hopeless as a paintkit and most repaints look accordingly bad. But the majority of repaints is for that model 3. The third one is the Yak-42 by Gleb Sergeyev. It comes with a paintkit, but has serious uv-mapping bugs, which cause ugly green smudges on the plane. I'd pass on this one, especially since the flight dynamics are hopelessly messed up on this one. 4. The fourth one is the SKJ model. The website has been down for years, but there's a 2008 snapshot of it in the web archive. It is the ancestor of the CIS model, but it has the most hopelessly wasteful uv mapping ever and nearly all repaints of it are ugly photo pastes. Repaints. All but the Air Moldova and Tandem Aero repaints can be found on the web. There is actually an Air Moldova repaint too, but that's for the 2004 corporate identity overhaul. In 2003 the Air Moldova planes were still rather drab looking. Not painted : Aviaexpresscruise and Atlantis European Airways. The former never had Yak-42s and the only flight for this assignment was a Airzena codeshare between Moscow and Batumi. Atlantix European only ever had A320s. Use a Saratov Airlines Yak-42 for that one. Okay, and now the pictures: Number one shows the CIS model in Air Kazakstan colors. There is a KZK repaint for the Xomer yak, but I wanted to test out the paintkit for the newer CIS model. ![]() And the next two sleeping beauties on the ramp at Chisinau may look the same, but aren't. The second one has a little sticker identifying it as a Tandem Aero craft, but there are no points for guessing whom they leased it from ;) ![]() So much for the Yaks. Now comes the busy part with the Tupolevs looming. Cheers, Dan "Airbrake" Pecher
